Rumor: Vancouver Canucks Worried About Offer Sheet
The Vancouver Canucks have watched the NHL drama unfold over the past few weeks, and according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Canucks management has legitimate concern about a team offer-sheeting young star Elias Pettersson.
The 22-year-old Swedish star is currently sitting without a contract and if any team wants to get him to agree to an offer sheet, they will have to pay big bucks. The deal will need to be for at least $9 million a season, which would cost them two first-round picks, one second and one third-rounder. Certainly a massive asking price, however, Pettersson is one of the best young pivots in the game.
At this point, there doesn't appear to be any team willing or able to make the move. The Canucks are in a bit of trouble because they need to not only pay Pettersson, but also young defenseman Quinn Hughes.
According to Cap Friendly, the Canucks have just over $10 million in cap space, and they are going to need to get creative in order to make the numbers work. Both players are worth much more than $5 million per season.
