Veteran Forward Zack Smith Retires

Zack Smith is officially retiring from the NHL. He shared his decision with The Athletic's Ian Mendes earlier today

Smith will justifiably be remembered most for his time with the Ottawa Senators. He played 11 out his 12 NHL seasons with the team and was an alternate captain. During his time there, he became a fan favorite because of his immensely hard work ethic and high degree of tenacity. He was a bottom-six forward who had the ability to contribute offensively at times, too. His best year in the league was during the 2015-16 season when he scored 25 goals and recorded 36 points in 81 games. He also had 32 points the following season in 74 games.

Smith last played in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2019-20 season. In 50 games with the team, he scored four goals and had 11 total points. A back injury would end his season prematurely and required surgery. He was also waived this season by Chicago and did not get into any action.

In 662 career games, he had 98 goals, 106 assists, 204 points and 722 penalty minutes.

Overall, he had a very solid career. Enjoy your retirement, Zack!
