2 Montreal Canadiens' Prospects Who Could Get A Call-Up This Season
As the season gets underway, players will begin to suffer injuries as they sacrifice their bodies for the sake of their team, not to mention the ever-present concern of a positive Covid diagnosis. Eventually, some players will miss games, and others will need to be called in to replace them in the lineup. Here are two such prospects who could see some playing time on the Montreal Canadiens this season.
Ryan Poehling
The 25th overall pick by the Habs in 2017, Poehling had a solid training camp and was only sent down to the Laval Rockets of the AHL during the last round of roster cuts. He has had an up-and-down path to his development, exploding onto the scene with a hat trick and the shootout winner in his first NHL game. Since then, his abilities at the NHL level have been inconsistent, but there is still lots of hope in Habs' country that this player can be a steady contributor to their team in the near future. If there is an opening at the forward position this season, Poehling will be the top choice to be called up.

Cayden Primeau
With goaltender Carey Price's decision to enroll himself in the NHL's Player Assistance Program, the Habs' situation in net has become a lot less certain, at least for the first month or so of the season. The earliest Price could return is mid-November, but there's a chance he could be out for longer, and the Habs have no way of knowing until Price himself decides he's ready. That means, for now, Jake Allen is the starter in Montreal. To back him up, the Habs claimed Sam Montembault off of waivers from Florida. Montembault has shown flashes of being a legit NHL goalie, and possibly a starter down the road. However, his ability to consistently to hold down either goaltending spot on an NHL team hasn't come together yet. Montembault may hold his own until Price can get back to playing. If he's unable to provide steady support for Jake Allen then it's likely that rookie Cayden Primeau, who was assigned to the Rockets after training camp, will be the guy the Canadiens turn to.
