2 Ottawa Senators Prospects Who Could Get Called Up This Season
As the season gets underway, players will begin to suffer injuries as they sacrifice their bodies for the sake of their team, not to mention the ever-present concern of a positive Covid diagnosis. Eventually, there will be players who will need to miss games, and others will need to be called in to replace them in the lineup. Here are two such prospects who could see some playing time on the Ottawa Senators this season.
Egor Sokolov
Sens fans may have been disappointed by Sokolov's transition to the AHL. The 2nd-round pick from 2020 that put up 92 points in 52 games in the QMJHL had a very pedestrian start to his pro hockey career. It was nothing disastrous, he had 15 goals and 25 points in 35 games with the Belleville Senators, but posted a very ugly -13 on the year. To start his second AHL season, Sokolov looked to be playing at the same level he was last season, but that quickly changed. As of this writing, he has 2 goals and 4 points in 6 games. Here's the catch: he scored all of his points in one game. That's the kind of impact the Senators are looking for from this player, whose Junior career was founded on goal-scoring. All Sokolov needs to do is to continue having big games like that, and he'll be seeing the NHL ice in no time.

Then, he pulls the monkey off his back and chucked it into the stands. What a guy.

Lassi Thomson
Could this call-up be used to bring in Erik Brannstrom? Absolutely, there's a good chance the Sens are more eager to get him in the lineup given his age and previous NHL experience. However, the reality is that Brannstrom is currently sitting at 0 points and a -4 in 6 games with Belleville. Granted, the BSens have struggled across the board to start the season, but those numbers don't scream "incoming NHL call-up." Then there's the play of Lassi Thomson, who is one of the few players on Belleville who looks to have taken a step forward in his game. Even on bad nights, Thomson stands out as being a steady blueliner, and that's a trend that began at the start of training camp and has continued into the regular season. He's got 1 goal this season and has assumed the mantle of Belleville's top defender through 6 games. NHL teams regularly need fill-in players on the blueline, and they will usually call upon their best prospect to take on the job. For Ottawa right now, that prospect is Thomson.
