The team waived him once again on Monday, this time for the purpose of a buyout, as this likely spells the end of Lehtonen in North America hockey. The 27-year-old is in the final year of his current contract, paying him $900,000.
Lehtonen appeared in 17 games for the Blue Jackets last season after a mid-season trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The ex-KHL superstar managed to record only three assists in those 17 games and showed he hasn't quite got accustomed to the NHL ice surface.
The struggle continued this training camp and the Blue Jackets had to make the tough decision. Look for Lehtonen to head back to Finland and play for Jokerit where he was a point a game player as recent as last season.
