Report: Toronto Maple Leafs Haven't Started Extension Talks With Goaltender

According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to have contract discussions with starting goaltender Jack Campbell. The 29-year-old has one year remaining on his current deal and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Pagnotta also noted that both parties will likely wait until after the regular season to begin them.

The Maple Leafs just signed defenseman Morgan Reilly to an eight-year, $60 million extension. With this, they currently have a little over $75 million of cap space used for next season. With the salary cap expected to go up $1 million from its current $81.5 million maximum cap hit, the Leafs could find a way to extend Campbell. However, it isn't going to be a walk in the park, especially with how well Campbell has played these last few seasons.

It's rather apparent that Campbell will be getting a significant raise from his current $1.65 million cap hit. A comparable to keep in mind is the recent three-year, $15 million extension Cal Petersen signed with the Los Angeles Kings.

In seven games this season, Campbell is doing very well again, as he sports a 3-2-1 record and .918 SV%.
