Update On Ilya Mikheyev's Injury

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe has announced that Ilya Mikheyev needs thumb surgery and will be out for at least eight weeks.

Mikheyev was injured in Toronto's final preseason game against the Ottawa Senators. We previously reported that he was expected to be out for a significant amount of time. Now, we have a definitive timeline and sadly, it is in fact a long time.

This is awful news for Mikheyev. He was aiming to start the season strong and have a bounce back year. In 54 games last season, he scored seven goals and had 10 assists. It was a noticeable decrease in production, he had eight goals and 23 points in just 39 games the season before. Now, he will be out for a significant period of time and start the season late.

Here's to hoping Ilya not only can come back strong, but also thrive. The 27-year-old winger showed previously he can be a good scorer in this league.
