Mikheyev was injured in Toronto's final preseason game against the Ottawa Senators. We previously reported that he was expected to be out for a significant amount of time. Now, we have a definitive timeline and sadly, it is in fact a long time.🚨🚨🚨Injury Update: #LeafsForever HC Sheldon Keefe confirmed to media today that Ilya Mikheyev will have surgery on a broken thumb and will miss a minimum of 8 weeks. pic.twitter.com/AbXstJ4zmT

This is awful news for Mikheyev. He was aiming to start the season strong and have a bounce back year. In 54 games last season, he scored seven goals and had 10 assists. It was a noticeable decrease in production, he had eight goals and 23 points in just 39 games the season before. Now, he will be out for a significant period of time and start the season late.
Here's to hoping Ilya not only can come back strong, but also thrive. The 27-year-old winger showed previously he can be a good scorer in this league.
