Veteran Defenseman Officially Signs With Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have officially signed veteran defenseman Jack Johnson to a one-year, $750,000 contract. Before the start of the preseason, they signed the 34-year-old to a professional tryout contract. It is rather apparent that he has since impressed them.

We recently reported that this was going to occur, so it's not that surprising to see it come into fruition.

Johnson will provide the Avalanche with more depth on their backend. With the NHL returning to a full 82-game schedule, he should have plenty of chances to get into action. It was a short off-season and sadly, injuries will inevitably occur during the year.

Johnson played 13 games last season with the New York Rangers. In them, he scored one goal.

This is a small, but good move for the Avalanche. It's never a bad thing to add a veteran defenseman as insurance. Johnson also comes with 950 games of NHL experience, so he can be a mentor for the team's younger players, too.
