Video: Former New Jersey Devils Prospect Announces Retirement In Unique Way
Former New Jersey Devils prospect Nikita Popugaev has announced his retirement in a rather intriguing manner. On his Instagram account, he shared a video of himself setting all of his hockey equipment on fire. The 22-year-old is now aiming to be a social media influencer.
Popugaev was selected 98th overall by the Devils in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He never appeared in an NHL game and primarily spent his time developing back home in Russia.
During the 2018-19 season, he played 17 games with the Binghamton Devils. With them, he scored three goals and had five points. The following season, he played for the Devils' ECHL affiliate, the Adirondack Thunder. He had nine goals and 25 points in 47 games with the team.
This past season, he moved back to the KHL and played for both Dynamo Moskva and Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. In 25 games total between the two teams, he had a goal and five assists.
