Video: Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner Scores First Goal Of Season
Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings, Mitch Marner finally scored his first goal of the regular season. After a costly turnover by Nick Leddy behind the net, Marner had a wide open net and quickly potted the goal.
It wasn't the prettiest of goals, but this was big for Marner. The 24-year-old forward has been off to a very slow start this season and has been a primary focus of criticism from Leaf fans. In nine games on the campaign, he now has a goal and three total points. However, it seems that maybe a much-needed hot streak could be on the way, as he now has two points in his last two games.
Marner is far too good of a player to struggle this much offensively over an entire 82-game schedule. In 55 games last season, he scored 20 goals and recorded 67 points. That kind of production is more what we should from him.
Nonetheless, congrats to Mitch for finally breaking the ice. Even if the goal was a gift, it turned out to be big for the Leafs, as it was their game winner.
