Washington Capitals Claim Young Defenseman From Seattle Kraken

The Washington Capitals have claimed Dennis Cholowski off waivers from the Seattle Kraken.

Cholowski was selected by the Kraken as their pick from the Detroit Red Wings. With the Kraken's strong defensive depth, it seemed inevitable that Cholowski would be waived. Now, the 2016 first-round pick will be trying to cement himself as a full-time NHLer with the Capitals.

In 16 games with the Red Wings last season, he scored a goal and had two assists. He also had three goals and 10 points in 13 games with the Grand Rapid Griffins, so the potential to be a strong offensive defenseman is there. Washington could be the best destination for a defenseman like him, as he has players like Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov and the currently injured Nicklas Backstrom who produce points regularly. He could tack on a lot of assists if he gets the chance to play frequently.

In 104 career NHL games, the 23-year-old defenseman has 10 goals, 17 assists and 27 points.
