2 Philadelphia Flyers Prospects Who Could Get Called Up This Season
As the season gets underway, players will begin to suffer injuries as they sacrifice their bodies for the sake of their team, not to mention the ever-present concern of a positive Covid diagnosis. Eventually, there will be players who will need to miss games, and others will need to be called in to replace them in the lineup. Here are two such prospects who could see some playing time on the Philadelphia Flyers this season.
Felix Sandstrom
Look, the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms are off to a tough start to their season. 7 games in and they have yet to win a single one of them, posting a current record of 0-5-2. It's hard to get a sense of where any of these players are at when their team is struggling so much, but one player is showing he can stand out even under tough circumstances. Goalie Felix Sandstrom stuck around with the Flyers through the entirety of their pre-season before finally getting re-assigned to the AHL. Since arriving in Lehigh Valley, Sandstrom has yet to win a game, though he's started 4 out of 7. Despite that record, Sandstrom is currently sitting at a .908sv% and a 2.79 GAA. Both of these are improvements over his numbers from last year, despite already having the same number of regulation losses that he saw all of last season. This isn't the first time Sandstrom has managed to achieve solid numbers despite a losing record. He put up a .921sv% in the HockeyAllsvenskan Swedish league last year despite his record of 1-4-0. Sandstrom is giving off Linus Ullmark-vibes: a good goalie who is keeping his struggling team in every game that he plays. While the Flyers' tandem of Carter Hart and Martin Jones is set in stone for the moment, an injury to either one will see the 24-year old Sandstrom getting the call for his first NHL appearance.

Morgan Frost
This isn't much of a stretch, given that Frost is the top prospect the Flyers currently have in their pipeline. Fans may have been concerned about him being cut from the training camp roster early, but need to remember that Frost only played 2 pro hockey games in over 560 days prior to this year's pre-season. Injuries and the Covid-19 pandemic are to blame for that situation, but regardless, Frost has been sidelined for some time and it shouldn't come as a surprise he may need to shake off the rust before jumping into the NHL. The good news is Frost is currently tied for the team lead in scoring in Lehigh Valley, sitting at 1 goal and 4 points in 7 games. He's not exactly blowing the doors off, but again these are the first 7 games he's played since January. If this is how he plays when he's out of practice, then once he's returned to his comfort level Frost should be pounding on the door to get into the NHL. Much like Joel Farabee before him, if Frost can produce steadily in the first half of the AHL season, the Flyers won't have much choice but to call him up for a fresh look at the NHL, and there's a very real possibility he will stick around for the long haul.
