Matt Murray Headed to the American Hockey League
Ottawa Senators netminder Matt Murray has cleared waivers and will now be loaned to the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League.
The Buffalo Sabres and Arizona Coyotes were reportedly interested in the veteran netminder but it appears not at full price. Perhaps a trade can be worked out where the Senators have to retain some of Murray's contract. The veteran netminder has two more seasons left on his current deal, making $6.25 million per season.
After winning two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Murray has struggled in Ottawa. A lot of it could certainly be pointed to playing behind a much younger and inexperienced team who wasn't expecting to win Cups, but there's also been holes in Murray's game which obviously haven't gone unnoticed.
So far this season the Thunder Bay, Ontario native has an 0-5-0 record with a 3.26 GAA and a save percentage of .890. Certainly underwhelming numbers and it's never going to be easy to remain on a team after the head coach calls you out in the media.
Let's hope Murray find his game and get back to doing the things we expect in the AHL. Or, perhaps the Sens could be working the phones right now explaining to teams how they will retain salary in any trade. Interesting times in Ottawa for sure as along with their Captain getting bit, their one-time considered goaltender of the future is now headed to the AHL.
