Matt Murray Officially Placed On Waivers By Ottawa Senators

Well, they officially did it. The Ottawa Senators have placed goaltender Matt Murray on waivers.

Friday night, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Senators were planning to this with Murray, but it's crazy to see it now actually come into fruition.

It was just in October of 2020 that the Senators acquired Murray from the Penguins. From there, they immediately signed him to a four-year, $25 million contract. He was expected to be their long term starting goaltender and at the time, it made sense. He won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh, showed previous brilliance in goal and was still just 26 years old.

Now, a little over a year later, Murray is the team's third string goalie and they are hoping another franchise scoops him and his $6.25 million cap hit right up. That certainly isn't a lock to happen, though, as Murray has struggled mightily since joining the Senators. In 33 total games with Ottawa these last two seasons, he has a 10-18-1 record, .892 SV% and 3.35 GAA. This season has been particularly rough for him, as he sports a 0-5-1 record and .890 SV%.

Before being placed on waivers, head coach D.J. Smith criticized Murray's play and even healthy scratched him for Friday evening's tilt against the Anaheim Ducks. Now, the team feels confident rolling with an Anton Forsberg-Filip Gustavsson tandem over Murray.
