This decision was a no-brainer for the Wild, as Koivu is such a big part of their history. The 38-year-old played 15 seasons with the organization and was captain for 11 of them. With that, he is their all-time leader in numerous statistics, which most importantly include games (1,028), assists (504) and points (709).
Koivu was originally drafted by the Wild with the sixth overall pick of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Given the fact that he played over 1,000 games there and was their franchise player for many seasons, it's clear they made the right call.
Nonetheless, congrats to Mikko for this amazing achievement! Minnesota fans - save the date!
