Rumor: Matt Murray Finished With Ottawa Senators

In some developing news, the Ottawa Senators scratched Matt Murray on Friday night in Anaheim. Reports have now surfaced from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that the Senators are putting the two-time Stanley Cup winning netminder on waivers on Saturday.

This is a significant step for Murray who could certainly go unclaimed as he comes with an expensive price tag. He signed in Ottawa back in October of 2020 for four years at $25 million, making $6.25 million annual average value.

It was a promising move for the Sens when it went down but it's been nothing but disappointment since. Murray was 117-53-19 with the Penguins over the course of five seasons before signing with the Senators but since has gone 10-18-1. This season the former third-round pick has recorded a 3.26 GAA and a .890 save %.

Ottawa head coach DJ Smith recently called out Murray for not being there when the team needed a save. You could certainly feel a move brewing for the Senators, but this is a big one for sure. Here's what Smith had to say about Murray's game after Wednesday's loss:

We deserved better. A point, or two. The difference tonight is probably their goaltending. I didn’t mind our details. I just think we’ve got to get someone to take the net for us and start to win us some games when we give that effort. We need someone to get in there and hold us right now. We’re a young team that needs someone to steal one for us, probably.

Looks like Smith won't have to worry much more about Murray's performance in his crease.
