Trade Rumor: Buffalo Sabres Shopping For a Goalie
The Buffalo Sabres are still very much in a rebuild. Management continues to look for pieces for the future and have apparently shifted their focus of late to finding a goaltender on the trade market.
This is according to Elliotte Friedman who had this to say in his latest 32 Thoughts:
Buffalo has to be looking for a goalie. Aaron Dell was pulled following the first period of Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to Boston. Unfortunately, Craig Anderson’s return date is not certain, and the Sabres need to give their young players help behind them. The challenge is teams still in the race might not be willing to give up any of their top three goalies for their own insurance. You want an option that can help you. How many are available?
As far as any available there aren't many who are playing lights out and their team is open to moving them. The likes of Joonas Korpisalo and Matt Murray could certainly be bought for the right price, however both aren't off to good starts this season. Alexandar Georgiev is available, but much the same, has struggled a tremendous amount this season and the Sabres would certainly have to pay a premium for taking anyone from the Rangers.
It could end up being a situation where the Sabres have to ride out their veterans and wait for top prospect Devon Levi. He was the piece brought back from the Florida Panthers in the Sam Reinhart trade and he's been lighting it up this season. Levi plays in the NCAA for Northeastern and in 14 games so far this year has recorded a 1.49 GAA and a .949 save %.
The Sabres are currently 7-10-2 on the season and don't appear to be a contender for a playoff spot. That could certainly change as the season is still young however, it's not likely to happen. There's no doubt they continue to monitor the goalie market across the NHL and if someone is available for the right price who can be a Sabre for the next at least three seasons, expect to see general manager Kevyn Adams pull the trigger.
