Trade Rumor Involving Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have found themselves within a lost season after a dismal start to the 2021-22 campaign. Turns out some changes could be on the way as TVA Sports reporters Anthony Martineau and Nicolas Cloutier have forward Brendan Gallagher being a player who could be traded.

Gallagher is a heart and soul type and it would certainly be a major shakeup to the core of the Canadiens. The veteran forward is now 29 years old and is under contract at $6.5 million for the next five seasons. He just signed the new extension back in October of 2020, which just kicked in for this season. He holds no-trade protection and submits a list of six teams he would like to avoid.

So far this season in 18 games, Gallagher has recorded eight points. His best season came back in 2017-18 when he scored 31 times and collected 54 points in 82 games. The pesky forward is someone who is near and dear to the heart of general manager Marc Bergevin, however Bergevin's future is very unclear in Montreal.

As for interested teams the Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks are three teams to keep an eye on as they have room for Gallagher on their books. The Ducks have dealt with a number of injuries this season so if a deal was to go down mid-season which does seem a bit unlikely at this point, it would be the Ducks as the front-runner.

Expect to see some changes in Montreal mid-season but those are probably going to be some minor moves. We may have to wait until the offseason for the big fireworks to be set off.
