Trade Rumor: New York Rangers Shopping Goaltender
According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the New York Rangers tried to trade goaltender Alexandar Georgiev before the season started and did not have any bites. Turns out they could be reintroducing themselves to the idea of moving on from the struggling netminder.
Georgiev has appeared in six games this season and has been awful. He currently sits with a 4.08 GAA and a .858 save %. The Rangers are losing confidence in their backup and with Igor Shesterkin signed to a long-term deal, it makes sense for the team to see what's out their for their pending restricted free-agent netminder.
Georgiev is making $2.45 million this season and with only just over 100 games of NHL experience under his belt, won't have a ton of leverage with negotiations. The 4.08 GAA also doesn't help. However, there are a number of teams throughout the league who lack goaltending depth so there's going to be interest in acquiring the Russian goalie for the right price.
Here's more from Brooks on the Rangers goaltending situation:
Georgiev, unhappy with his status as backup to Shesterkin, has wanted out for a while, even if he might never have formally requested general manager Chris Drury to trade him. The Blueshirts made Georgiev available over the summer, but never got more than a nibble. Now, they may not even get that.
Sounds like the goaltending situation on the Big Apple is something we'll be monitoring heading into the Christmas roster freeze and next year closer to the trade deadline.
