Video: Oilers' Stuart Skinner Makes Costly Mistake

In Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner fanned on a pass while out of position. Dylan Larkin was right there to take advantage of the mistake and scored on the wide open net.

This goal would give the Red Wings a 3-0 lead and ended up being the eventual game-winner. Thus, it does sting because of this.

However, even with the mistake, Skinner had a very solid performance. This was his first NHL start of the 2021-22 season and he looked quite comfortable as the game progressed. He went on to make 35 saves on 38 shots, which is certainly impressive from a prospect aiming to become a full-time NHLer.

Skinner also has had success with the Bakersfield Condors. He took a big step forward last season, as he had a .914 SV% in 31 games with the team. In two games this season with them, he has a 1.50 GAA and .946 SV%. Therefore, he is a goaltender who could be on Edmonton permanently in the near future.

Nonetheless, even though this mistake was a big one, Skinner rebounded well for the rest of the game and that warrants praise. Rookies make mistakes, but how they respond to them is ultimately what matters in the end.
