3 Montreal Canadiens Who Probably Won't Be Back Next Season

The 2021-22 season has turned into a wasted one for the Montreal Canadiens. The team has made some major changes off the ice and a roster overhaul is next. The Habs will surely be moving some parts before the trade deadline and into next offseason. Let's take a look at three current players who probably won't be back next season.

Jeff Petry: This season has been a head-scratcher for the mobile defenseman who hasn't produced much all year. He's appeared in 27 games, hasn't scored and only has tallied two assists. Last season Petry recorded 42 points in 55 games. Expect to see management really zone in on his game the rest of the year and make a decision on his future in the offseason. Petry holds no-trade protection to 15 teams and with three years left at $6.25 million per, expect to see the Canadiens have to retain some salary in this move.

Jake Allen: The Canadiens are expected to gauge the market on Allen who is only 31 and signed to a reasonable contract at $2.87 million per season. His contract runs until the end of next season, so while he could certainly be moved next summer, there's been some rumblings he could be moved before March's trade deadline. At this point it seems like the team is comfortable keeping Carey Price in the fold and that doesn't serve well for Allen's future with the club.

Brendan Gallagher: Marc Bergevin's favorite player makes a ton of money at $6.5 million for someone who hasn't reached 50 points in three seasons. While Gallagher is a heart and soul type of talent, he's overpriced and the Canadiens are expected to see what the trade market holds next summer. So far in 23 games this season he's recorded 10 points. With Cole Caufield, Josh Anderson and Tyler Toffoli all capable of playing right-wing and signed to cheaper contracts, it appears 'Gally' is in his final season in Montreal.
