Another Forward To Have Contract Terminated

The Ottawa Senators have placed forward Pontus Aberg on unconditional waivers. The team will be terminating his contract and the 28-year-old will once again be playing in Europe.

The Senators signed Aberg to a one-year, two-way contract during the offseason. He was unable to land himself a spot with the NHL roster and was assigned to the Belleville Senators for the start of the regular season. In 17 contests with the AHL squad, he had two goals and 11 points.

During the season before, he left the Toronto Maple Leafs and played for Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL. In 49 games with the team, he had 10 goals and 23 points. That kind of production was certainly decent, so Ottawa opted to give the winger a shot at an NHL comeback.

Aberg's best days in the NHL occurred when he was a member of the Anaheim Ducks during the 2018-19 campaign. In 37 games with the team, he scored 11 goals and recorded 19 points. Although that kind of production was very solid, he was unable to replicate those totals after being traded away.

Nevertheless, here's to hoping Pontus succeeds back in Europe. Who knows? Maybe another strong campaign could make another NHL team to give him a chance in the future.

Contract terminations have been occurring more frequently than normal this season, as players like Leo Komarov, Kirill Semyonov, Alexander Volkov and Dmytro Timashov have all left to go overseas. Sami Niku's contract also was with the Winnipeg Jets, but he of course signed with the Montreal Canadiens after.
