Dallas Stars Waive Veteran Goaltender
The Dallas Stars have placed veteran goaltender Anton Khudobin on waivers on Monday. This comes after recent trade talks went nowhere, and the Stars were left with no choice but to cut him.
The Stars have been carrying one-to-many netminders this season and appear to be giving the keys to Braden Holtby and youngster Jake Oettinger. Both have faired very well this season, including Oettinger who is 5-1-0 with a 1.52 goals against average and a .951 save percentage.
Jeff Marek of Sportsnet was first to report the trade talks with Khudobin last week and while they certainly intensified over the past seven days, the Stars could not agree to terms with another club. The Russian netminder has struggled this season, tallying a 3-3-0 record with a 3.73 GAA and a .873 save %. After helping lead the Stars to the Stanley Cup final back in 2019-20 Khudobin's production has dipped ever since.
The 35-year-old has this season and next on his contract, paying him $3.3 million. At this point it feels like there is a good chance he gets claimed and one team to watch is the Edmonton Oilers. Another club who could have interest - the Arizona Coyotes. They could play Khudobin until late March and move him for draft picks at the trade deadline.
Certainly a very uncertain time for the veteran goaltender. Let's hope everything works out and he lands on his feet with an NHL club.
