NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs Shopping Forward for Trade
The Toronto Maple Leafs currently have a suspension to Jason Spezza to deal with, along with several injuries including to two of their top-six defensemen. Rumor has them shopping forward Pierre Engvall to try and land some depth for their blue line.
The Maple Leafs drafted Engvall in the seventh round of the 2014 draft and have been awfully loyal to his development. This includes the Swedish winger receiving a ton of minutes on the team's second power play unit this season, even though he's only scored three goals and nine points in 27 games.
There were a ton of rumors circulating regarding the Maple Leafs moving out either Travis Dermott or Justin Holl, but because of the injury bug, it appears the team may have shifted their focus to using some forward depth to plug a hole on their blueline.
Engvall is a big body at 6'5 but he doesn't play overly physical. There will be interest as he's able to play down the middle and on either wing, often showing off his blazing speed and signature spin-o-rama wrist shot. Engvall is only making $1.25 million this season. The Maple Leafs forward becomes a restricted free agent next summer.
Some teams to watch out for include the Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings. All four teams have defensemen on expiring contracts who Toronto may have interest in.
