NHL Rumors: Philadelphia Flyers Making Major Changes
The Philadelphia Flyers got pounded by the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-1 on Sunday and rumor has ownership is putting some pressure on general manager Chuck Fletcher to make some changes. A head coaching change and/or blockbuster trade is expected to go down in Philly before Christmas.
The Flyers have been a huge disappointment this season after a busy offseason where they felt the changes were all positive ones. From big trades to free agent signings, the Flyers were active and unfortunately the moves haven't resulted in more points.
After their last loss to the Lightning, Flyers captain Claude Giroux spoke to the media and had this to say:
I've played a lot of embarrassing games, and this is one of them. We need to figure it out pretty quick here.
Giroux knows changes are on the horizon if things don't head in a better direction in Philly. He's a pending free-agent and could be asked to waive his trade protection to facilitate a deal. Flyers forward Cam Atkinson, who is in his first season with the Flyers was just as disappointed after Sunday's loss:
Our fans, they support us, and to lay kind of a goose egg like that in front of them, it's embarrassing. Like I said, let's take a hard look in the mirror, and we have another opportunity tomorrow, and let's get back on track
Keep an eye on the Flyers early this week. If they lose another game in similar fashion to Sunday's embarrassing loss, the hammer is going to drop and some moves will be made by management.
UPDATE:
Coaching change coming in PHI, too. Alain Vigneault out.
