Ottawa Senators: 2 Biggest Surprises Of The Season So Far

Every NHL team has now played 20 games this season, so we are starting to get a better understanding of what to expect from them moving forward. There have been certain players who have been big surprises thus far and it feels fair to shine a light on them. In this series, we will be looking at two from each team who certainly can be classified as that.

In this piece, we will be looking at the Ottawa Senators. It's been another terrible season for the Senators, so it is truthfully hard to find much to be positive about. However, these two players have been exceeding initial expectations thus far, so they deserve some time in the limelight.

Tyler Ennis: Tyler Ennis signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Senators after initially being on a tryout with them. Ottawa was clearly right deciding to bring him back, as the 32-year-old winger has been a nice bright spot for them this season. In 22 games, he has a goal and 10 points. Keep in mind, he had only nine points in 30 games last season with the Edmonton Oilers. If he keeps this kind of production up from here, Ottawa could elect to re-sign him for next season, too.

Drake Batherson: Drake Batherson broke out last season, as he had 17 goals and 34 points in 56 games. Due to this, the Senators immediately signed him to a six-year, $29.85 million contract. He certainly is living up to it already, as he eight goals and 21 points in just 19 games on the season. Not too many fans would have predicted him to be over a point-per-game player, but at this time, he's just that. If he keeps this up from here, his $4.975 million cap hit could be one of the biggest steals in the entire NHL.
