Ottawa Senators Place Veteran Defenseman On Waivers

In a bit of a surprising move, the Ottawa Senators have placed veteran defenseman Michael Del Zotto on waivers.
This certainly wasn't what the Senators had in mind when they signed Del Zotto to a two-year, $4 million contract during the summer. However, it's now become clear that the 31-year-old has fallen low enough on their depth chart that Ottawa doesn't think it's necessary to keep him on their NHL roster.

Del Zotto only has played in ten games this season. In terms of his offensive productions, he's been quite well, as he has two goals and six points. However, defensively it hasn't been a walk in the park for him, as he sports a minus-9 rating. With that, he also hasn't played since November 27th's contest against the Los Angeles Kings.

Given the fact that he carries a $2 million contract until the end of the next season, it seems unlikely that he will be claimed by another franchise. However, with all the injuries that are happening right now, maybe a team will be open to taking on his contract. We'll have to see what happens on that front soon.
