Veteran Free Agent Goaltender Signs PTO

After not being able to find an NHL home this offseason, goaltender Devan Dubnyk has signed a professional tryout contract with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.
Although AHL PTOs aren't necessarily the biggest of occurrences, this one with Dubnyk is certainly intriguing to see. The 35-year-old goaltender is a three-time All-Star who last participated in the event back in 2019. With that, he is the best goaltender after Tuukka Rask without a contract right now, so it seems very likely that he is trying to showcase himself in hopes of landing an NHL contract. Thankfully for him, the Checkers just so happen to be affiliated with two NHL teams - the Seattle Kraken and Florida Panthers. The Kraken specifically sport three goalies who each have save percentages under .890, too.

Dubnyk split last season between the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. In 22 games, he had a 6-11-2 record, .895 SV% and 3.20 GAA. Although he certainly struggled, he does possess a strong resume and could very well find his way back into the league.

In 542 career games between the Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, Minnesota Wild, Sharks and Avalanche, Dubnyk has a 253-206-54 record, 2.61 GAA and .914 SV%.

If the Kraken and Panthers decide to pass on him, Dubnyk could have other NHL options. The Buffalo Sabres jump to mind, as Craig Anderson, Malcolm Subban and Dustin Tokarski are all out with injuries. Furthermore, the Avalanche could even consider him again, as Pavel Francouz is on IR and has had major injury trouble as of late.
