Hurricanes Sign Defenseman To Extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Jalen Chatfield to a two-year contract extension. It will carry a $750,000 cap hit at the NHL level and pay him $250,000 in the minors. 

Chatfield signed a contract with the Hurricanes over the summer, and it's apparent that they have been impressed by him thus far. When discussing the extension with reporters, general manager Don Waddell noted that Chatfield has "played the Hurricane way" and earned his extension. The 25-year-old defenseman should be happy to hear that from his GM. 

In seven games with the Hurricanes this season, Chatfield has an assist and a plus-1 rating. However, he hasn't played for the NHL club since December 12th's contest against the Vancouver Canucks - his former team. In the AHL with the Chicago Wolves this campaign, he has four goals and three assists in 21 games. 

Although Chatfield getting extended isn't the biggest news in the world, it's hard not to feel happy for him. Carolina is keeping him around for two more years, and he should be one of their primary depth defensemen from here.
