NHL Rumors: 3 New Jersey Devils Being Discussed in Trades

The New Jersey Devils sit 16 points out of a playoff spot in the eastern conference and will be shifting their focus to next season as management is fielding trade calls ahead of the March 21 trade deadline. The team has been active in the past and will be looking to capitalize on some of their assets once again this season. Let's take a look at 3 Devils who are expected to be on other teams by late March:

P.K Subban

The polarizing defenseman has a huge ticket but the Devils are able to retain half of his $9-million salary for the remainder of the season and will be in line for a better return. Subban can still help a playoff team, providing some depth as a right-handed defenseman who are very hard to find in the league. So far in 39 games the 32-year-old has recorded 15 points, averaging just under 20 minutes of ice-time a night. One crazy stat on Subban this season is he averages 1:01 of ice-time on the power play each game but hasn't recorded one single power-play point in 2021-22. Perhaps his new team will keep him off their man advantage. He has almost 100 games of postseason experience under his belt and 62 points in 96 career Stanley Cup playoff games is impressive stuff from the Toronto native.

Damon Severson

Speaking of Toronto, they are one team linked to the Devils blue line and it may be more about Severson than Subban. The former second-round pick is five years younger than his fellow defender and is signed through next season at $4.16 million. Severson is a stud and can play on the top pair or second pair, and in all situations. So far in 40 games he's tallied 21 points and could fetch a hefty return in any deal. We've seen the likes of Alec Martinez and Jake Muzzin dealt with term left on their contracts which fetched their teams a huge return. Expect to see three pieces head to New Jersey for Severson which is likely to include a first-round pick or two seconds.

Andreas Johnsson

The speedy winger is enjoying himself  a solid season with 24 points in 40 games and has caught the attention of playoff bound teams. Johnsson is a hard-worker who doesn't take a shift off and is never shy to muck it up in the dirty areas. The 27-year-old was a former seventh-round pick of the Maple Leafs who was sent to Jersey in a salary dump move. His no-trade protection which can keep him away from 10 teams of his choice doesn't kick in until next summer so look for New Jersey to get a sense of the market on their left-winger.
