NHL Rumors: Canucks Could Trade Veteran Defenseman

With the Vancouver Canucks finally naming their new general manager, it may open the door for the team to make moves. According to David Pagnotta, defenseman Tyler Myers could be a player they look to trade to gain more cap space.

Myers carries a $6 million cap hit until the completion of the 2023-24 season. During that period, players like Brock Boeser, Bo Horvat, and J.T. Miller (if they elect to keep him), will have their contracts expire. Therefore, they are in a position where they will need to shed some cap space to keep them, and Myers' contract is an expensive one.

For Myers to be traded, the Canucks would need to work around his 10-team no-trade list. Although that may make trading him a little bit more challenging, there are still 21 other franchises they are permitted to move him to - no questions asked.

In 42 games this season, Myers has 10 assists and a plus-5 rating. Offensively, it's been a bit of a down year for him. For example, in 55 games last season, he had six goals to go along with 15 helpers. Yet, if he begins to contribute a bit more to this pace, there could be teams willing to acquire the 6-foot-8 defenseman. Yet, that cap hit is still hefty for a top-four defenseman.

Alas, we will have to wait and see if Vancouver begins to shop Myers.
