NHL Rumors: Oilers Could Target 3 Goalies

According to Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek, Semyon Varlamov, Vitek Vanecek, and Joonas Korpisalo are all potential trade targets for the Edmonton Oilers.

At this juncture of the season, it would be wise for the Oilers to consider adding a goaltender. After losing six straight games, they have fallen to seventh place in the Pacific Division and have an 18-15-2 record. Yet, even with their disastrous stretch of play over the last month, they are still very much in the playoff hunt. Thus, improving on the Mikko Koskinen-Mike Smith tandem feels like a true necessity.

If the Islanders are unable to get back into the playoff picture, Varlamov will likely be on the block. He has an expiring contract and could be an appealing rental for Edmonton. Although he has a 3-6-1 record this season, he also sports a respectable .917 save percentage and 2.61 goals-against average. Furthermore, he has a good chunk of experience in the playoffs.

It has been rumored that the Capitals would like to add a veteran goalie to the mix. That could make a guy like Vanecek expendable, and Edmonton should call Washington if so. In 19 appearances this campaign, the 26-year-old has an 8-4-5 record, 2.49 goals-against average, and .911 save percentage.

Korpisalo has been linked to the Oilers for what feels like the entire season. Yet, he is having a down year, as he sports a 4-7-0 record, 3.95 goals-against average, and .882 save percentage. Out of the trio, he would have the least trade value. However, if he's unable to turn it around, it may not be best for the Oilers to bring in another inconsistent goaltender.
