NHL Rumors: Oilers Targeting Blues Goaltender

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Edmonton Oilers have expressed interest in St. Louis Blues goaltender Ville Husso.

The Oilers have been linked to several different goaltenders, which makes sense given their current situation in net. Mikko Koskinen has cooled off immensely since a nice start to the year, while Mike Smith gets injured far too often.

Husso is having a ridiculously good year with the Blues. At this time, he sports an 8-2-1 record, 1.88 goals-against average, and .943 save percentage. However, even though he is outplaying Jordan Binnington significantly, he is receiving far fewer starts than him. He also is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer, so St. Louis could decide to trade him if they want to run with Binnington for the future.

Although Husso has been excellent, the sample size is rather small. As a rookie last season, he had a 9-6-1 record, .893 save percentage, and 3.21 goals-against average in 17 appearances. With this, it also seems possible that he could come back down to Earth as the year continues. Perhaps the Oilers should evaluate how he performs as the season continues to pass by.

It will be interesting to see if the Blues are willing to part ways with Husso. If he continues to play this well, he could net them a nice return at the deadline. However, with the Blues looking to go on a playoff run, it wouldn't hurt for them to keep him as their backup - even if they lose him for nothing this offseason.
