NHL Rumors: Rangers Interested In Star Center

The New York Rangers are expected to pursue San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl heavily as we inch closer to the trade deadline, according to Frank Seravalli

After missing the playoffs last season, the Rangers have taken a notable leap forward this year. At this time, they have a very impressive 22-9-4 record and are currently second place in the Metropolitan Division. Because they have a surplus of prospects and they are playing so well, it certainly would make sense for them to acquire a top-of-the-line rental like Hertl. Who's to say they aren't contenders with how fantastically they are playing?

If acquired, it would be unlikely that the Rangers would be able to afford him next season, though. The 28-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and the Rangers have already signed Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox to monstrous extensions this season. Financially, adding another player for serious money next season seems too out of the question due to the salary cap.

However, even if he's there only for the short term, he would be an awesome addition to the Blueshirts. In 35 games this season, he has a notable 17 goals to go along with 28 points. He would provide them with another top-six forward and make their offense a lot stronger.
