Blue Jackets Sign Rookie Goaltender
The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Jet Greaves to a three-year, entry-level contract. This is notable, as the 20-year-old will also be backing up Jean-Francois Berube for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Sabres.
Greaves previously signed an AHL contract with Columbus' affiliate - the Cleveland Monsters. Since then, he has played with the Monsters and the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. In 13 games with Cleveland, he has a 4-6-0 record and .898 save percentage.
The opportunity for Greaves to sign this ELC opened up due to both Joonas Korpisalo and Elvis Merzlikins being out with injuries. Now, the youngster will have his first taste of regular-season action at the NHL level because of it. If Korpisalo and Merzlikins end up having to miss a decent chunk of time, perhaps he could even get a start.
At this point of the season, the Blue Jackets have a 24-23-1 record and are 11 points behind the Bruins for the second Wild Card spot. Thus, losing their two top goaltenders certainly doesn't help their chances of catching them.
