Cholowski was originally claimed off waivers by the Capitals from the Seattle Kraken earlier this campaign. Due to this, if the Kraken decide to bring him back, he would be able to immediately go straight to the American Hockey League (AHL). However, if claimed by another team, he would still be eligible to go on waivers if they tried to send him down to the minors.
Cholowski was selected by the Detroit Red Wings with the 20th overall pick of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. So far, he hasn't lived up to his first-round pick status, which is easy to see with him being placed on waivers for a second time. In 111 career games between the Red Wings and Capitals, he has 10 goals, 18 assists, 28 points, and a minus-51 rating.
Cholowski did not get into any NHL action with the Kraken when on their roster. With Washington, he has played in seven contests, where he had an assist and a minus-4 rating. Although he hasn't been taking the world by storm, could we see him still get claimed again? He only has a $900,000 cap hit for the remainder of the season and could work as a depth defenseman elsewhere.
Alas, let's see what happens with the 23-year-old from here.
