Maple Leafs Sign Goaltender To Extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Joseph Woll to a three-year contract extension. He will have an average annual value of $766,666.

The first year of Woll's contract is two-way, and he will earn $350,000 at the AHL level. However, it then transforms into a one-way contract for the remaining two years of the deal.

Woll has gotten into his first action at the NHL level this season. So far, he hasn't looked too out of place at all, as he has a 3-1-0 record, 2.76 goals-against average, .911 save percentage, and one shutout. This is encouraging to see from the 23-year-old, and if he can keep this kind of play up when called upon, this could develop into a steal of a contract for the Leafs.

With the Toronto Marlies this season, Woll has a 5-2-0 record, .911 save percentage, and 3.32 goals-against average. He is showing signs of true improvement, as he had below a .900 save percentage in each of his other AHL seasons.

If Woll can continue to develop at the pace he is, one has to wonder what this means for Petr Mrazek's future with the team. He has been in the rumor mill, so this may only add more fuel to the fire.

Alas, the Leafs now have Woll locked up for three more years.
