NHL Rumors: Canadiens And Flames Talking Second Big Trade
Although the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames just completed a huge trade, they may not be done making deals with each other yet. According to Elliotte Friedman, Calgary is still very interested in Ben Chiarot and even came close to acquiring him as a part of the Tyler Toffoli trade.
Friedman noted that the Canadiens likely will receive a bigger return for Chiarot by trading him on his own, so it's understandable why they are now going down this route. Yet, the Flames have been linked to the veteran defenseman since his name first came up in the rumor mill, so it isn't surprising to hear that they are still trying to acquire him.
On offense, the Flames look all set on paper. Thus, there's certainly a possibility that we may not see them add another forward by the deadline. However, they still do have some question marks on defense, so acquiring a hard-nosed defenseman like Chiarot could be extremely beneficial to them. This is especially true when noting that the 30-year-old has had past success in the postseason.
It will be interesting to see if the Canadiens and Flames end up making another blockbuster. When looking at how much Calgary was willing to give up for Toffoli, Montreal probably will have no issues continuing discussions with them.
