NHL Rumors: Devils Could Trade Veteran Defenseman
According to Frank Seravalli, the New Jersey Devils could trade Damon Severson by the deadline.
Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald is looking to make changes to the team's roster. After a summer of spending, the Devils have unfortunately struggled this season and sport a 16-26-5 record. They are looking to improve for the future, so they are open to shaking up their core a bit. That is where a guy like Severson joins the discussion.
Severson has spent the entirety of his 531-game career with the Devils and is currently one of their alternate captains. However, with the signing of Dougie Hamilton, New Jersey will have to make a decision about the former's future. His contract expires at the completion of next season, and he will be looking for a raise.
In 45 games this season, Severson has six goals, 18 assists, and a minus-15 rating. It's been noted that the Devils are looking to make "hockey trades" this deadline season, so they wouldn't be looking to trade him for just draft picks or prospects.
Alas, it will be interesting to see if they elect to trade the longtime Devil.
