NHL Rumors: Red Wings Interested In Canadiens Defenseman

According to Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now, the Detroit Red Wings are interested in Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry.

It's already been established by Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes that he is willing to move Petry for the right return. It's been a disastrous season for the Canadiens, and they are expected to make multiple moves before the trade deadline passes. They already got started on that when they traded Tyler Toffoli to the Calgary Flames.

The Canadiens can take their time with trading Petry, as he is locked up until the completion of the 2024-25 season. However, they are looking to change the identity of their organization and the 34-year-old is open to a change of scenery.

Detroit could be an interesting location for Petry. Although they are still rebuilding, they have taken a big leap forward this season and have a 23-24-6 record. They are not a top team in the league of course, but they were making a push for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference for a good chunk of the season. They should get better from here with their young core, so maybe the veteran defenseman would be open to a move there.
