Team Canada Names Captain For Olympics

Team Canada has announced that Eric Staal will be their captain for the Winter Olympics.

This shouldn't be surprising to anybody. Staal is the biggest name on Canada's roster and arguably out of all the players participating in the Olympics. He has an amazing resume under his belt, too. In 1,293 NHL games between the Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, and Montreal Canadiens, he had 441 goals, 593 assists, and 1,034 points. With that, he of course was captain of the Hurricanes for several seasons and was a part of their 2006 Stanley Cup team.

Staal also has had a lot of experience playing for Canada internationally, too. The veteran center most notably was a part of their 2010 gold medal team in Vancouver. With that, he also won gold with Canada during the 2007 World Championships as well.

Overall, Staal is a proven winner who also has an immense amount of experience being a leader. Therefore, it was both the easy and perfect choice to sport the "C" for them. From here, he will be aiming to lead them to another gold medal and earn himself an NHL contract by its completion.

David Desharnais and Maxim Noreau have also been named as alternate captains.
