McBain is not planning to sign an entry-level contract with Minnesota and will have the opportunity to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. As a result of this, the Wild are looking to trade him by the deadline and are seeking a second-round pick in return.
Although the Canadiens are rebuilding, they are willing to part ways with a second-round pick if they are certain that McBain will sign a contract with them. When seeing as how they are trading away many of their veterans, it could be an ideal spot for the 22-year-old.
In 24 games this season with Boston College, McBain has 19 goals to go along with 14 assists. It's been a very strong season for the senior, and he has understandably raised his trade value in the process. Let's see if Montreal ends up winning the sweepstakes.
