Middleton has emerged as a legitimate defenseman this season and has played top-four minutes in the process. The 26-year-old also has the possibility of becoming a Group VI UFA this offseason. That will occur if he does not appear in 20 more games before the season is over, so this fact could make the Sharks open to moving him.
In 39 games this season, Middleton has three goals, five assists, and a plus-2 rating. The 6-foot-3 defenseman also plays an immensely heavy game, which his 62 penalty minutes and 76 hits show perfectly. This kind of play is always welcomed during the playoffs, so it's not surprising that the Sharks are receiving calls regarding him.
LeBrun also noted that the St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, and Tampa Bay Lightning are three teams who have expressed the most interest. Yet, with this development, don't be surprised to see more teams jump into the sweepstakes from here.
