Bruins Sign College Prospect
The Boston Bruins have added another prospect to their system, as they have signed Georgii Merkulov to a three-year, entry-level contract. It will begin during the 2022-23 season.
After recording 73 points in 74 games with the USHL's Youngstown Phantoms over two years, Merkulov made the switch to collegiate play for this season. His offensive success translated over to the NCAA quite well, as he had an impressive 20 goals and 34 points in 36 games. He led the team in these key statistics, too.
The Bruins are not known for having the deepest of prospect pools, and that isn't ideal with core players like Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand getting older. Thus, giving Merkulov a shot certainly makes sense for them to do. If he can carry over this kind of offensive success to the NHL, the Bruins could have themselves a solid scoring winger in the future.
With the Frozen Four final set to take place, we are likely to see more college free agents find new homes over the next handful of days. Stay tuned for all updates.
