On Tuesday night during their game against the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils announced that centre Jack Hughes will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Hughes left Sunday night's game following a knee-on-knee hit from New York Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom. The hit left Hughes with a low-grade MCL sprain in right knee. No supplemental discipline was given to Wahlstrom for the hit, besides having to fight Devils defenseman PK Subban.
Prior to his injury, Hughes was having his best season to date, having scored 26 goals and 56 points in 49 games for the Devils. His best totals before this season came when he scored 11 goals and 31 points in 56 games last year.I really hope Jack Hughes is okay. Oliver Wahlstrom is a scumbag.

Hughes' 56 points was second in team scoring behind Jesper Bratt who has 65 points in 64 games thus far. Hughes also finished his season with no penalty minutes, which may allow him to be a candidate for the Lady Byng Trophy at season's end. What could work against him is that he will have only played 49 of a possible 82 games.
With only 13 games left in the season, prior to tonight's game (in which the Devils lost 3-1), the team decided with no playoff aspirations that it would be best to shutdown Hughes for the year so that he can return 100% next season. He will also be starting his new eight-year contract worth $8 million per year when he returns next season.
As we speak, the Devils are currently last in the Metropolitan Division and 29th in the NHL with 54 points. They will play next at home against the last place Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night at 7pm. It will be interesting to see how the Devils perform without their star centre the rest of the way.
