NHL Rumors: Flames Likely To Buy Out Forward

According to Rory Boylen, the Calgary Flames are likely to buy out Sean Monahan this offseason.

It was a disastrous 2021-22 campaign for Monahan, as he not only had trouble producing offensively but also needed to have the second hip surgery of his career. In 65 games this season, the former top-line center had eight goals, 15 assists, and a minus-15 rating. With that, he also found himself healthy scratched after the acquisitions of Calle Jarnkrok and Ryan Carpenter.

Due to all of this and Monahan's $6 million cap hit until the end of next season, it would not be surprising to see Calgary move on from his contract. If this does in fact come to fruition, it will be interesting to see if other teams would be willing to give the 27-year-old a chance. Keep in mind, this is a player who recorded 82 points in 78 games with the Flames just three years ago. If signed to a one-year, low-salary deal, he could be worth taking a chance on.

Alas, this is a storyline that all hockey fans should pay attention to this summer. It's not too far away, folks!
