Video: Auston Matthews Makes History as Maple Leafs Clinch Playoff Spot
Auston Matthews is a goal-scoring machine and the Toronto Maple Leafs superstar is not slowing down anytime soon. Matthews magical run continued on Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens as he buried his 57th and 58th snipes of the season. The Maple Leafs went on to beat the Habs 3-2, resulting in Toronto clinching a playoff position for the sixth straight season.
Saturday night in Toronto was just another episode of Matthews greatness as we've all been witnessing it all season long. He scored two goals in 27 seconds against the Canadiens and could of easily had two other goals throughout the night. While 60 seems well within reach, some feel so does 70-goals.
The greatest goal-scorer in Maple Leafs history had this to say after the game:
I just think that [the playoff berth] is the next step. This season has been continued progression for us and I think this last segment or so, we've been playing some pretty good hockey and we just want to keep that going.
Toronto is on fire of late as they're 7-0-1 in their past eight games and have a five point lead on the Boston Bruins for second in the Atlantic Division. The Canadiens on the other hand now fall to 20-41-11 on the season and lost goaltender Jake Allen to a lower-body injury in the process. Matthews on the other hand had his point streak extended to 16 straight games, recording 31 points over that stretch. The Maple Leafs superstar has now scored 51 goals in his last 50 games, becoming the first player since Mario Lemieux to accomplish the task, dating back to 1996. Toronto's sniper also set another franchise record on Saturday night, surpassing Frank Mahovlich's single-season record for most even-strength goals with his 43rd tally.
