NHL Rumors: Ducks And Oilers Could Complete Blockbuster
According to Allan Mitchell, the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks could complete an offseason blockbuster that centers around star goaltender John Gibson.
Mitchell noted that the Ducks have an abundance of cap space, so they would be able to take on contracts from the Oilers to make a deal work. We saw Anaheim do this in the Hampus Lindholm trade when they acquired John Moore from the Boston Bruins. Some players who Edmonton could throw into a Gibson blockbuster include Zack Kassian and/or Tyson Barrie. With that, picks and a young player like either Kailer Yamamoto or Jesse Puljujarvi would have to be added.
Edmonton obviously could use Gibson as their number-one netminder. Goaltending has been the team's primary issue all season. Mike Smith has had a lot of injury trouble, while Mikko Koskinen just isn't meant to be a starter. We noted the Oilers as a potential landing spot for Gibson previously, so with this development, let's see if it happens this summer.
