Blue Jackets Sign Forward
The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Joona Luoto to a one-year, two-way contract.
Luoto had his contract terminated by the Winnipeg Jets this season, but he will now be heading back to North America to play with Columbus. It also will reunite him with longtime friend Patrik Laine.
Luoto's playoff performance with Tappara of Liiga this year likely led to this second chance in North America, however, as he had 17 points in 14 games. With this production, he won the Jari Kurri Award as the league's top player in the postseason.
Luoto will now once again be pushing to become a full-time NHL player. He last appeared in the NHL during the 2019-20 season with the Jets, where he failed to record a point in 16 contests. Perhaps the change of scenery will help him find his scoring touch in the sport's most competitive league. At worst, Columbus has at least added some forward depth to their system.
