NHL Rumors: Scheifele's Name Coming Up in Trade Discussions

There was concern about Mark Scheifele's future as a Winnipeg Jet, but now there is even more cause for concern. Murat Ates, Jets writer for The Athletic, said that Scheifele's name has come up in preliminary trade discussions. Either the exit interviews didn't go exactly as planned, or there may be changes coming in Winnipeg.

Scheifele is under contract for two more seasons at $6.125 million per, a very good deal considering his consistent production. He broke out in 2015-16, recording six consecutive point per game seasons totaling 172 goals and 432 points in 415 games. He is a very good No. 1 center which is hard to come by and teams will definitely have interest in. But with recent news about Pierre-Luc Dubois wanting to test free agency in 2024 when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, the Jets' options for top centermen will have dwindled.

Scheifele has logged over 20 minutes a night on average for six consecutive seasons as well and if the Jets intend on rebuilding or re-tooling, they will get a nice return for their top centerman. The questions that remain are will the trade talks become more serious and can the Jets turn themselves into a contender next season to convince Scheifele that the team is making progress and they can win.
